Just Do It!
So… Last night as I was leaving worship service, a young man approached me and two other people. He proceeded to say he was going into ministry, and asked for a piece of advice from each of us. I’m ashamed to admit it, but as soon as these words came out of his mouth my palms started sweating. I racked my brain for something that “sounded good”…
We started fighting over which one should go first… All trying to come up with a sound piece of advice. As we stood there stammering like idiots, he interrupted us and gave HIS piece of advice first. He said, “Just do it. When God speaks to you, just do it!” Silencing us and gaining our full attention, he continued, “People may think I’m stupid, but God sure don’t.”
I could barely manage to whisper, “No, no He doesn’t,” as my heart was immediately taken back—taken back by how God used this complete stranger to speak to a secret insecurity that had begun to rise within me.
He departed from us as quickly as he had been introduced, and I remained standing there in my own little world for a second, just thinking. Thinking about how this messenger would never know the extent of how he had just been used in that brief moment…. About how earlier that same day, I had begun struggling with thoughts of, “God… People are going to think I’m completely stupid. You want me to tell them what? What use would it be? I mean people aren’t going to take this seriously…”
Wow. Can you say convicted? Oh, “me” of little faith…
I’m reminded today that when we seek God and ask for His voice and direction, most of the time His answer will be something completely unexpected. But John 10:4-5 says:“When he (the shepherd) has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. They will never follow a stranger; instead they will run away from him, because they don’t recognize the voice of strangers.”
When we know God speaks to us, we shouldn’t question its validity. Satan will always be close behind whispering doubts and fears, and that’s why we must hold up the shield of faith (Ephesians 6:16).
For many of us, I wonder… Have we wandered around and allowed ourselves to be distanced from the voice of God for so long, that we recognize the voice of strangers over the voice of our shepherd?
So having been challenged, I would like to extend that challenge to you today.
If God tells you to go speak to the boy in the corner—Just do it. If God tells you to pray over someone—Just do it. If God tells you to do a cartwheel—Just do it. If God tells you to stop and listen—Just do it. When God speaks to you—JUST DO IT.
I mean, yeah… Some people may think you’re crazy. But I’ve decided that I would rather be crazy for Jesus than sane for anything else.
It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, God will use anyone with a willing heart.
What is God telling you to do today?
