Our Plans vs. God’s Plans: Daring to Adventure
Happy New Year! (4 days late, I know…)
After watching a few HGTV home makeovers this morning, I got all “hyped-up” about changing some things around in my room. So, I was running around cleaning (with wet toenails I might add) and being careful not to venture too far from my portable heater, when I heard a series of loud knocks from our back door. Instinctively checking things out from my room window first, I saw Daddy with a demeanor that was very urgent and kind of antsy. I took off running like a madwoman to make sure everything was ok. Before I could even get any words out, he inserted, “HURRY! Go put on some warmer clothes and come on!!!!! I want to show you something!!! HURRY UP!” Not giving me time to complain about the burst of severely cold South GA air (it’s currently 51°F), I ran back and put on an old hoodie and three pairs of fuzzy socks and my boots… As reluctant as I was to mess up my shinny red toes.
Joining him in the ranger, we took off through the hayfield. Not even knowing what it was he wanted to show me yet, I was instantly so glad I had given up decorating to take in the beautiful day. Coming to a stop deep in the woods, we hopped out, and I followed him alongside our Rottweiler, Heidi, through the thick brush to the final destination…
Pictures really do not do this special treasure of a spot justice; it was simply and… Unexpectedly beautiful.
Now at 20, I look back and see all the times God was eagerly knocking at the door of my heart in much of the same way…. I am always ecstatic and overwhelmed with joy when I’m obedient, and I’m always regretful and hurt when I’m not. Revelation 3:19-20 says:
As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be committed and repent.
Listen! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and
opens the door, I will come in to him and have dinner with him, and he with Me…
I think sometimes we get this preconceived idea in our heads that God is forever seated on His throne, scowling down upon us with such a serious countenance. And, while God is a God of justice and disciplines like any loving father, He also LOVES to show us new things and He LOVES to love us in ways that are unique to each and every individual on this earth. Verse 21 of Revelation 3 goes on to say:
The victor: I will give him the right to sit with Me on My throne,
just as I also won the victory and sat down with My Father on His throne.
The thing is… God didn’t dream us up and create us to punish us! God created us to cherish and love us! And while Satan would have you believe otherwise, God desires to bless you in ways that are beyond your wildest imagination. Trust me… I’ve experienced it!
But… If you are after the hand of God with no real desire to know His heart, you’ve missed the whole point. Are you going to choose to love and cherish God back with the free will He gave you? Do you truly understand the depth of His love for you?
The first step starts with you… You have to open your heart to God to understand the beauty of His presence.
As crazy or uncomfortable as it might be to venture from the comfort of where you are to where God is calling you, He is the One who will warm and fulfill you like nothing or no one else can.
Jesus didn’t have to venture from the comfort of His throne—But He did. He didn’t have to abandon His robes of splendor to wrap Himself in flesh—But He did. He didn’t have to lay down His life on the cross—But He did.
Because YOU were His prize.
What’s the prize of your heart today? Is it Jesus, or is it the alcohol you’re spending all your money on? Is it Jesus, or is it the earthly “status” you’re after? Is it Jesus, or is it the website you are addicted to? Is it Jesus… Or is it the comfort of where you are?
Jesus has been described as having a smile that lights up the heavens. Man… I’m blessed enough to feel the warmth of His smile from here, but of all the sights I can’t wait to behold in heaven up close one day… That smile is number 1 on my list.
Take a moment and sit in His presence—what is He telling you to do? Will you trust Him enough to actually do it?
I have asked one thing from the Lord;
it is what I desire:
to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
gazing on the beauty of the Lord and seeking Him in His temple…
My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”
And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”…
I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness
while I am here in the land of the living.
Wait patiently for the Lord. Be strong and courageous.
Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.Psalm 27:4-14
